An Optometric Perspective in a Multi-Disciplinary Approach
The fifth book to be released by Dr. DeAnn M. Fitzgerald, OD, Clinical Trajectories for Concussion/TBI covers the six trajectories of injury, pathology, and treatment in the following areas: Vision, Vestibular, Cervical, Cognition and Fatigue, Anxiety and Mood and Post-Concussion Migraine. For each of these trajectories, the author and Vice President of the Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association dives into the topics of assessment, diagnosis, symptoms, interviewing techniques, risk factors, treatment options and academic/occupational considerations.
Traumatic brain injury is often an invisible condition and the clues to solving the mystery of brain dysfunction after trauma are the presenting symptoms. Oftentimes, these symptoms are seen as disjointed, disconnected presentations. The interrelationship is the underlying answer to the clues of symptoms and treatment.
Also included in this addition is Concussion, Part 2: Vision Vestibular, the follow-up to Dr. Fitzgerald’s Concussion: What’s Vision Got to Do With It? which covers such topics as the definition and understanding of PTVS (Post Trauma Vision Syndrome), symptoms- including statistical data and related treatment, assessment protocols, developing a treatment plan and case studies. As the connection between the vision and vestibular systems is critical in normal, everyday activities, when one system is challenged or limited, the other system can be affected as well. Intervention in these areas can bring improvements because of the brain’s neuroplasticity.
